Purging from the Inside Out

Lately we have been throwing away. Summertime is great for that, eh?! Toss toss toss! A lot of stuff is ending up in our garbage bags....which are getting full very quickly! Something feels enchanting…freeing…about getting rid of no longer needed stuff.

That got me thinking. Is there anything that I need to purge from my life that's an idol taking a form as an object? Is there any garbage I need to get rid of? Some examples could be the computer, TV, cable television, a media website, a book you know is bad, worldly music, or something that is causing me to sin or stumble.

I have been memorizing Colossians 3, where it talks about putting off the old man (or girl!) and putting on the new girl! Sometimes removing stuff in our lives that is wrong can be hard...but it is SO worth it in the end. Second Timothy 2:21 is a clear reminder "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work!" Beause ultimately, we want to be vessels of honour, right? And the only way we can do this is by purging our lives from the wrong stuff.

Take a look (a close look!) at your life, and get rid of anything that is standing in between you and God. Whether it be a certain CD, a novel you know you shouldn’t read, a t-shirt that just doesn’t have a great message on it, or a movie that is not good…get rid of it, and do it now! I can’t tell you how freeing it is to get rid of the “idols” or the worthless things in our lives.

And something very important to remember is that it’s not all about the actual stuff we have. It’s also about the heart. Let’s just say you always feel tempted to text your friend with a mean message. Okay, so you can get rid of your phone (the temptation), but you could still be angry at your friend in your heart! That’s why, friends, it is so very important to examine your heart, too.

First, examine and purge your physical stuff:

__  Your books. Are there any books you just know shouldn’t be on your shelf?

__  Your music. What kind of message is the music you listen to telling you? This is a very important area to examine.

__  Your clothes. What kind of message are your clothes conveying?

__  Your media devices. Are you using these to glorify God, or are you simply wasting time with them? Media devices are tricky. If used properly, they can be used for good. But if they are used incorrectly, you can end up in sticky messes! So be careful. If you’re not sure about getting rid of the TV altogether, just take a fast…a day, or a week, off from it. See how you feel. This is so helpful to me!

Next, examine your heart:

__  Am I thinking good thoughts?

__  Am I shielding my eyes from worthless things?

__  What thought predominantly occupies my mind? The beautiful line from the hymn Be Thou      My Vision reminds me, “Thou my best thought by day or by night.” Is God your first, and foremost, and BEST thought?!

__  How am I spending my time? Am I wasting it or using it productively?

__  Do I have a single-minded devotion to Jesus?

__  Is there anyone I need to apologize too?

__  What kind of messages am I allowing to soak into me?

__  What am I filling my mind with? Am I spend time in the Word every day?

These are questions that I need to ask myself, too! And sometimes weeding out the wrong habits in our life can be even harder then throwing away our books and movies! Yet this is so important.

To close, listen to this beautiful verse from Psalm 51:7, "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow!"
