I don't think I have ever really talked about Scripture Memory before on this blog, but it is something very important in the life of a Christian girl, and so come with me on a journey through memorizing Bible verses today.

Now when I was younger we attended a church that had a Scripture Memory program, and I found this to be a lot of fun.  I was only about five or six at the time, but I quickly was memorizing whole passages and whizzing through the memory program.  Years later, as we marvel at how fast I learned all those verses (most of which I still have in my memory today), my mom recently asked my dad how he taught me to memorize all those verses.  His reply?  He would read them over and over and over and over again to me just before bed, every night.  I would get so used to that, I would eventually say it along with him, and soon I had it memorized!

Now you may be wondering why it is a good idea to memorize Scripture.  Throughout the Bible we are commanded to, and it is very important because there may come a day when our Bibles will be taken from us.  It's in that time we'll need to remember the verses we memorized (Psalm 119:11).  I have personally found memorizing to be a fantastic source of comfort and encouragement.  When I am going through my day sometimes verses will pop up in my mind that I've memorized.  For example, when I can't sleep, I remember: "I will lie down and sleep in peace for you O Lord make me dwell in safety."  (Psalm 4:8)  So as you can see it's not just important but it's very helpful to remember these verses.  They will comfort us in times of trouble and in times of joy!

But how can you memorize verses?  Isn't it hard?  Well I once heard a young lady say it is fairly hard to memorize Scripture because she thinks that Satan is working against us.  In other words, He doesn't want us to have it commited to memory.  He would like to take away God's Word from us completley!  So that should make us even MORE eager to memorize as MUCH as we can, and you know what?  Studies show that young people (especiall children) are more prone to memorize faster when they are younger then when they are older, so take advantage of your youth and get memorizing.  You'll have truths to last you a lifetime - right in your heart.

Here are some tips to help get you started.

-Put sticky-notes up all over your house with the verse written on it.  Then whenever you walk by your light switch, or near your bulletin board, etc, you can simply walk by and memorize on the go.

-Write your Bible verse on a 3x5" card and carry it around with you everywhere.  When you are out outside working or in the line at the grocery store, review it!

-Purchase CDs with Scripture right on it.  Some of the CDs I enjoy are Hide'Em In Your Heart (by Steve Green Ministries), The Bible Study in Stereo, and Crown and Covenant Psalm CDS.  Listening to the Scriptures being sung is a great way to learn them

-Remember how we are on the "Siblings" theme?  Well, it's a great idea to hide Scripture in your heart with siblings!  You can have contests to see who can memorize the most verses, or who can memorize the verse faster.  Make it fun.

-Re-read the passage multiple times each day, then copy it down several times.  I try and copy it out in my journal a few times each day and after several days of doing this I usually have it memorized.

-Do hand motions.

-Record yourself saying the passage and then throughout the day listen to it.
