In so many ways, we are doing great health-wise in this Nation.  We have good health care! But somewhere along the way we lost the "water cure".  We have Coca Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, OJ, Coffee, Sparkling Drinks, Punch, and Apple Juice.  So why do we need water?  Water is essential to human life.  I recently came across a great article.  We can all agree water is important, right?   But if you are like me, you find it very hard to drink your 6-8 glasses per day.  Our bodies are made up of over 60% water.  Water helps build strong immune systems, fight headaches and drowsiness, and makes us much more alert.  It knocks off illnesses, it helps our kidneys function, and it helps us resist infection.  Here are some ways to drink more!  

 

1) "Am I Hungry or Thirsty?"

Whenever you feel a craving coming on ask yourself: "Am I hungry or thirsty?" Sometimes we mistake thirst for hunger.  Next time you need a snack try some water and see if you don't feel better.  The bottom line: be very sensitive as to whether your body is telling you 'eat' or 'drink'.  

2) Flavour It

If you are anything like me then you probably don't like plain-old water.  Flavour your water by taking advantage of fruit using chopped up orange, squeezed lemon, chopped strawberries, and other fresh fruit.  It adds a zap to your water and an unbelievably scrumptious flavor.

3) The Before Breakfast Hint

Every morning I try to have a glass of purified, cold water before breakfast.  Occasionally you can add a squirt of lemon juice, but as long as you have at least 1 glass of water before you eat this hint will work wonderfully.  How does it work? you ask.  Well, by drinking before you eat it gets your digestive system working and makes you thirsty during the day so you can (guess what?!) drink MORE WATER!

4) Use A Filter

Unfortantley water today has a lot of toxins that can be harmful in it.  By using a BRITA filter or one similar, you can get fresher, better tasting water for cheaper then an expensive one.  We just keep our BRITA in our frige.  

5) Fruits & Veggies Technique

Fruits and veggies have a lot of water in them; so eat 7-10 servings of them to get lots of water!  

A lot of people wonder how much water we should have.  I aim for 6 glasses a day but I don't always reach that!  When your pee is baby yellow or pale white that means you have enough water.  If it is dark yellow or even almost orange that means you don't have enough.
